Hard Work Equals Early Success as a Freshman Legislator
As a freshman legislator in Tallahassee, Mark took on the special interests and fought for the people of House District 88. He consistently spoke out against unfair taxes on the middle class, oil drilling, cuts in services for our elders and more giveaways to the insurance industry. Mark challenged Tallahassee leaders by offering new ideas and solutions to the serious budget issues plaguing Florida.
Mark demonstrated his leadership by fighting for seniors and children in Florida and publicly calling on the Governor Charlie Crist to use his constitutional authority to veto the budget that left 30,000 frail seniors on Florida waitlists.
4 Pieces of Legislation Pass in First Year
In his first legislative session, Mark sponsored several successful pieces of legislation. He passed legislation that improves the cost effectiveness of special districts, sponsored a House Memorial that calls on the U.S. Congress to appropriate more funding for in-home services for seniors and people with disabilities, was the House sponsor for a bill that closed a corporate documentary stamp loophole, and worked with legislators on both sides of the aisle to pass legislation that created more opportunities for homeless people seeking shelter.
Mark was appointed to serve as a Deputy Minority Whip by the Minority Leader. The Speaker of the House also appointed him to serve on the Public Service Commission Nominating Council. Mark served on 3 committees and an appropriations council early in his first term. Mark also serves on the House Democratic Policy Council.
